Working professionals seeking graduate programs have to be keen on the options that they take. This is because they already have a career to consider. Not unless the working professional is seeking to change their course altogether, the best option would be to consider a course that will enhance their skills in their career. But even before they think about the courses that they will do, it is important to consider the mode of studies ideal for them.
Online education
The obvious option for working professionals is online studies. Online education is an emerging model of education that was started with the advent of the internet. However, it has increased in popularity, more especially after the Covid-19 pandemic where a majority of schools were forced to offer online education to students. Online study is ideal for working professionals because they can set their own schedules to work and study. It is also an affordable option since colleges offering this mode doesn’t have many running cost that they would pass to students’ fees.
Evening classes
Another popular option that working professionals have is evening classes. These are special classes offered in the evening, probably from 5pm to 8pm. It accommodates working professionals who leave work at about 4pm. They can attend these classes and carry on with their work during the day. While it is a good option, it has suffered a few setbacks in the recent past. Accessibility is one of the major setbacks. It is limiting working professionals to colleges and universities near their work areas. It is hard for a working professional to choose their ideal college when it is not close to where they work.
Weekend classes
It is an option similar to evening classes just that all the lessons are offered over the weekends. It gives working professionals a chance to work during the week and dedicate their weekends to study. Most colleges offering this option would squeeze all the week’s lessons into two days i.e. Saturday and Sunday. It is a flexible option just that it takes away all weekends. It is not ideal for long courses because the working professional’s personal and social life will be lost in work and study only.
Verdict:
Of the three options presented, online education seems more flexible for working professionals. It also allows them to undertake other professional certifications like ACLS PALS, which are offered online. Therefore, it is worth considering online study for a working professional.
